Back to School Bread Box

There are many moms and dads out there who look forward to school starting again.....well let me tell you, I am not in that club. I enjoy summer vacation just as much as my boys do, and dread them going back as much as they do! But it is what it is...that's what I tell my 15 year old anyway!
So back to my 'Back to School Bread Box' Post. I picked up this cute little roll top bread box 2 weeks ago when we were visiting our brand new granddaughter in Houston! This was a $5 thrift store treasure, and I grab these whenever I see them. A makeover was definitely needed, and I knew exactly what I was going to do with it. This is my 4th one of these beauties and you can see the others in the slide show at the end of this post.
Step 1: First step Is always to clean these up and get them ready for painting. I decided I was going to go with my faux enamel treatment that I showed you last week.
Step 2: Paint your bread box with a Matte Black Spray Paint.

I do not have a very professional spray station, but as long as it isn't windy, this works for me!
Step 3: Using your finger or a qtip, apply Vaseline in random spots on your bread box as well as along various edges. The end result of this will be to give the appearance of aging. Sorry no pictures here, but you can always look back at last week's post.
Step 4: Spray your entire project with 2 coats of a White Gloss Spray Paint.
Step 5: Let your project dry until it is no longer tacky to the touch. Take a soft cloth and gently rub over the areas you applied the Vaseline to; removing the white paint. This distressing technique is perfect when you are using spray paint!

Step 6: Now you could stop here, but why would you do that? Go ahead and stencil the word 'BREAD' on top of your box with a black acrylic paint and a stencil you can pick up from Hobby Lobby.

Step 7: Once again, you could stop here as well, but you know I'm not going to. Go ahead and drill a hole for your knob in the bottom lip of the rolling mechanism.

TIP: I used painters tape above and below where I drilled to help prevent the chance of this 'delicate' wood from splitting. Yay! It worked too.

TIP: Every other week Hobby Lobby's knobs/pulls are 50% off!
Step 8: Before attaching your knob, go ahead and spray your box with a good Gloss
Sealer. Once dry, screw your knob in.

Now this doesn't make going back to school any better or easier, but along with books, backpacks, and pencils, my bread now has a cute place to start off the school year too!
Check out more pictures of this breadbox as well as 3 others that I have made over
the past year in the following slideshow.
Enjoy some yummy carbs from your fabulous faux enamel breadbox while you're at it!
